EA Games and Respawn Entertainment introduce APEX LEGENDS, a Battle Royale to rival Fortnite and PUBG
Just eight hours after its launch on Monday 4th February 2019, Apex Legends had already amassed more than one million unique users. The fact that it is free to play and compatible with the three main platforms (Xbox, PlayStation and PC) will definitely have helped. But, there are other factors.
Rather cleverly, EA flew a number of top streamers over to LA to unveil the release. Everything was very hush-hush then at 12 noon PST Apex Legends was streamed to millions of viewers watching their favorite players test the game out.
There is hype and then there is a really good game that captures the imagination of players. EA is confident that Apex Legends offers features that will make it a true contender for the likes of PUBG and Fortnite.
Choose your Legend
Pick one of eight powerful Legends, each with their own unique personality, strength and ability.
Build your crew
Choose a Legend that matches your play-style and a team that, when your strengths and abilities are combined, leads to a winning mix.
Battle Royale additions
New features to level up the Battle Royale genre:
- Respawn Beacons
- These are single use locations where players can bring their teammates back to life using their Legend Banner
- Smart Comms
- This feature allows teammates to ping the location of useful items to each other
- Intelligent Inventory

Season 1 is coming
March will see the first season of Apex Legends kicking off. Like Fortnite and PUBG, players will the opportunity to make purchases. The monetization strategy of Apex Legends has yet to be completely revealed but we do know that in March players will be able to buy Battle Passes to gain access to exclusive cosmetic items earned through gameplay.
The game is then set to follow a season based model with each season bringing new content in the form of weapons, Legends, skins and more.
How you will make money playing Apex Legends
Where there is a popular video game, there will be a way to make money! As for what EA will allow within the game, who knows. Two options I would bet my last easter egg on are: players making money playing in esports tournaments, and players making money playing Apex Legends streaming on Twitch and YouTube .
Make money playing Apex Legends by streaming on Twitch or YouTube
If your goal is to make a career out of playing games, now is a good chance! As the newest Battle Royale game on the circuit you have an opportunity to start building a fan base. It is simply easier to be the best at a new game than try to muscle your way into the top of an already established game like LoL.
1. Set up cost free donations
Rechaaarge is a great tool to set up, and you don’t even have to ask your viewers for money! Simply by trying out free apps or games, your audience can donate to you, cost-free!
To get started is fast and easy:
- Connect your Twitch or Youtube account to activate your profile
- Share your personal Rechaaarge link on social media and during your streams
- You’re all set and ready to go!
Like any good online tool Rechaaarge gives you your own gamified dashboard where you can follow your progress, create goals, customize your OBS and more.
2. Use paid donations tools
Twitch Bits is the streaming platform’s own currency and can be bought through Amazon and donated to streamers. In order to qualify you need to be a Twitch Affiliate or Partner.
Super Chat is YouTube’s donation feature that allows the viewer to pay for a personalized message within your live stream chat so they can get some special attention.
Streamlabs OBS and Streamelements are both stream management tools that have been widely popular among streamers to setup donations. They support the main payment methods.
Muxy is a tool dedicated exclusively to Twitch services. It, of course, adds personalized alerts on screen, with a modern and cool design.
3. Advertise with YouTube & Twitch
Still the most common way to make money streaming is by running ads on your live stream or video. Once it’s set up this is an easy way to make money as you don’t really need to do anything beyond your usual content creation. And both Twitch and YouTube let you choose how many ads you show as well as the length of the ads.
Though you will earn money, YouTube and Twitch take a big chunk of your revenue – YouTube walks away with 45% and Twitch takes a wopping 50%.
4. Get subscriptions or channel membership on your channel
Subscriptions and channel memberships are great as they guarantee a recurring monthly income for streamers.
Patreon is a monthly subscription based platform that allows fans to support their favorite streamers while also giving the viewer access to exclusive content.
If you’re on Twitch then you’ll know that as soon as you become an Affiliate or Partner, a subscription button automatically appears on your channel. If you’re on Youtube you can choose to have a channel membership once you become a YouTube Partner.
Make sure you reward your subscribers with cool and exclusive content. If you don’t, you probably won’t keep them. Typical perks include: badges, emojis, and other unique content or early access to events and tickets.
If you have gear or products that you use while your streaming then you could make commission when your viewers purchase these from affiliate sites. You just need to integrate an affiliate link into your channel and if a viewer makes a purchase through the link, you get commission.
There are loads of affiliate programs for gamers to choose from, just a few to check out are: Amazon Associates, NewEgg and GearBest.
6. Merchandise your brand
Fans love their merchandise and when you are big they’ll love you! You can convert their enthusiasm into dollar bills by selling your own personal Apex Legends brand.
Streamlabs Merch and Teespring are good options as they handle the process of merchandising your personal brand from beginning to end. Merch by Amazon is also good as long as you already have your own design sorted. Then you have Design by Humans who have a Twitch extension so viewers can go to your store without ever leaving your channel. Just be careful not to violate any copyright laws!
7. Getting and finding sponsors
If you can sell your own merchandise you should easily be able to find brands that want to sponsor you.
Youtube and Twitch make this pretty easy. To help facilitate the connection between content creators and brands, YouTube has FameBit and Twitch has their Bounty Board Program.
Stay tuned for more
That’s all we have for Apex Legends right now, but stay tuned for updates as we watch and see how this Battle Royal game plays out.
